Upper Mbokona Timber Bridge Reopened After Urgent Repairs

The Upper Mbokona timber bridge, located near the Central Bank area in West Honiara, has been reopened to the public as of late yesterday afternoon.

The bridge had been temporarily closed on Monday, 25th May, to allow for urgent repair works, which have now been successfully completed thanks to the prompt response of a local contractor, the BHB team.

The recent repairs focused on restoring the safety and functionality of this run-down bridge. The scope of work included:

– Installation of new decking for a smoother and safer ride

– Addition of running strips to enhance safety for pedestrians and vehicles

– Replacement of timber kerbs to improve edge security

– Construction of gabion protection banks to reinforce against erosion

The Ministry’s Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) appreciates the residents of Mbokona, Mbuburu, Titinge, Taba’a, and Lengakiki and all road users in West Honiara for their patience and cooperation during this temporary closure.

These urgent repairs were immediate measures to ensure safety. A comprehensive rehabilitation of this bridge is already planned and scheduled for later this year under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) Project. This full rehabilitation will provide long-term improvements and sustainability for the bridge.
