Solomon Islands Government Public Debt Management
Debt Management Unit (DMU); of the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT) manages and services Solomon Islands Government debt to maintain economic and fiscal stability.
Government debt; referred to as national debt, is the total amount of borrowing outstanding by the government at a point in time. Debt owed by the government is often gauged relative to the size of the economy – the ratio of debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Key roles; include providing sound debt management advice, debt servicing, managing Government borrowings, maintaining and expanding the domestic securities market, and ensuring accurate debt recording and reporting across Ministries. Continues to develop and implement debt policies that are geared towards sound debt management, essentially to stabilized Solomon Island’s economic and fiscal positions.
Collaborate with CBSI; through its designated office to provides data on domestic debt levels and facilitate by issuing Government debt securities (Bills and Bonds), acting as the Government’s banker and fiscal agent to facilitate debt servicing payment.
Definition
Public Debt: is the total amount of money owed by a national, state, and local government to domestic and foreign creditors.
Government Securities: are financial instruments (Bills & Bonds) issued by a government to borrow money from the public or institutions to finance its expenditures and manage national debt.
T-Bills: are short-term debt instruments issued by a government through Central Bank to manage short-term financing needs.
Bond: a form of long-term borrowing and a key tool for governments and corporations to finance projects, manage debt, or fund operations.
