ROAD RELIEF WORKS AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT ACROSS HONIARA

The Ministry through our Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD), has intensified road relief works across 20 key routes in Honiara following the recent heavy rainfall.

Local contractors have been deployed since late last month to stabilize, maintain, and secure both sealed and unsealed main roads. These temporary relief measures aim to ensure the safety of all road users while long-term maintenance and rehabilitation projects are finalized.

Scope of Works:

• The contractors are currently executing a comprehensive range of emergency repairs, including:
• Road Stabilization: Grading, resurfacing, and cold-patching across both sealed and unsealed networks.
• Infrastructure Maintenance: Critical bridge repairs and drainage clean-ups to prevent future flooding.
• Routine Maintenance: Standard upkeep works are concurrently nearing completion on selected sealed road sections.

Joint Operations to Ease CBD Congestion

To mitigate the traffic congestion caused by the ongoing construction along Mendana Avenue Road, the Land Transport Management Services Division has partnered with the Road Transport Board Taskforce.

Joint teams are actively managing traffic flow during morning and afternoon peak hours. This enforcement coincides with a critical phase of construction currently being executed under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project.

Notice to Vehicle Drivers/Operators: In tandem with traffic management, the taskforce is conducting active spot checks for defective and expired vehicles to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Prioritizing with Purpose

The Ministry acknowledges that while budget constraints remain a challenge, resources are being strictly prioritized toward the most critical road networks first. Field teams are working rigorously to ensure that all emergency works adhere to strict minimum quality standards.
