TRAFFIC ADVISORY: TEMPORARY NIGHT CLOSURE OF UPPER MBOKONA LOG BRIDGE FOR URGENT MAINTENANCE
Residents and vehicle drivers and operators traveling through Mbokona, Mbumbubu, Titinge, Taba’a, and surrounding areas are advised of a temporary road closure tonight. The Upper Mbokona Log Bridge, located near the Central Bank area, will be temporarily closed to all traffic starting tonight, Monday, 18th May 2026, at 8:00 PM, to undergo urgent relief maintenance works.
The closure is expected to last until late tonight. During this period, a local contractor will be working through the night to execute critical safety upgrades. The scope of work includes:
- Complete replacement of the bridge deck
- Installation of new running strips
- Installation of a new timber kerb
Detour and Traffic Management
To ensure the safety of both road users and the construction crew, all traffic will be redirected. Commuters who regularly use this route are advised to plan their journeys ahead of time and utilize the designated detour via the Mbububu—Lengakiki—Townground route.
Future Rehabilitation Plans
While tonight’s works will provide immediate relief and ensure the bridge remains safe for public use, long-term infrastructure improvements are already scheduled. The Upper Mbokona Log Bridge is set for a comprehensive, full rehabilitation under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE) II Project, slated to begin in the third quarter of this year.
The ministry’s Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) appreciate the West/Central Honiara residents for their patience, cooperation, and understanding as these urgent works are undertaken to ensure the bridge is safe for everyone.
Road users are urged to drive with caution, follow all posted detour signs, and prioritize road safety.
