Construction of Rifle Range Roundabout and Bus Bays Advances Despite Weather Challenges
Construction of the roundabout at Rifle Range along the Tandai Highway in West Honiara is progressing steadily, although the recent spell of poor weather has had some impact on progress. Current works are focused on the seaside section, after which construction will shift to the landside section.
Concurrent is the construction of two bus bays after the roundabout; Bishop’s Dale and Lelei have commenced this week on the section through to White River. Works on associated bus shelters, where space allows, are also targeted to commence once these bus bays are complete.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, stated that the project marks an important milestone in improving urban transport infrastructure in Honiara.
“The Rifle Range roundabout is a key investment in easing traffic congestion and improving road safety for all users. We are pleased with the progress to date and appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as works continue toward completion,” Mr Lilia said.
“The new bus shelters will also benefit the nearby community and the general public by improving daily commuting routes.”
Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when travelling through these areas, as ongoing works and changing weather conditions may result in temporary traffic delays and disruptions.
The project team continues to make steady progress toward completion, with timelines subject to weather and site conditions.
Once completed, this upgraded highway will provide safer, smoother, and more reliable travel that will support economic activity and improve daily commuting for West Honiara residents, business houses, and communities in the western part of Guadalcanal Province.
Motorists and pedestrians are again reminded to follow all traffic management signage, observe speed limits, and cooperate with traffic controllers on site to ensure everyone’s safety while works are underway.
This project is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a collaboration between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government.
