Mendana Avenue Sealing Project to Progress in Phases Over Six Months

Sealing of Mendana Avenue Road from Heritage Park Hotel Roundabout to the Honiara City Council Roundabout is set to commence at the end of this month and into the coming months.
Given the scope and complexity, construction will be carried out in four stages across eight sections. Works will progress sequentially, alternating between the seaside and landside carriageways. The targeted timeframe for completion is approximately 5–6 months.
However, progress remains subject to favourable weather conditions.
Stage 1: From the Heritage Park roundabout to the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) intersection, beginning on the seaside carriageway.
Stage 2: From the SIPA intersection to the Hot Bread Kitchen roundabout.
Stage 3: From Hot Bread Kitchen roundabout to Honiara Central Market.
Stage 4: From Central Market to the MID/HCC roundabout.
Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the construction period. The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will work closely with nearby businesses to minimise disruptions and maintain access where possible. Drivers/vehicle owners are advised to plan their daily routes accordingly, as congestion will be at peak times. Hibiscus Avenue Road and Lekamboli Road will remain accessible as an alternative route.
Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and observe all traffic signs and directions from traffic controllers. Pedestrians should use designated crossings, observe safety signage, and avoid construction zones at all times.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, said while temporary disruptions are inevitable, the long-term benefits will be substantial.
“This work, once completed, will improve driving conditions, safety, and the resilience of our road network in our city’s business district.
“We thank the public and business community for their patience and cooperation.”
Apart from minor finishing touches—such as installing street lights, traffic signs, and road markings—these works are expected to substantially complete the LMCP road improvements extending from the CBD to the western city limits at White River Bridge by mid-2026.
The project is led by the Solomon Islands Government under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, with support from the Asian Development Bank.
The contractor will work section by section closing landside lanes and after switching to the seaside depending on the phase and completion of the asphalting works.
Drivers/vehicle owners are advised to plan their daily routes accordingly, as congestion will be at peak times.
