Grubbing and Clearance Work at Choiseul Bay Township Project Progresses
Road clearing and grubbing are progressing well at Lot 9 Tarekukure Road Network within the Choiseul Bay Township Project (CBTP).
Local contractor Central Islands Civil Construction Ltd (CICC) commenced work on this lot earlier this year and is on full steam with the foundational road network and delineation of the zones.
This road connects to plots designated for a new hospital, light industries, a cemetery zone, and other planned establishments. Funded by the Ministry of Provincial Government Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS) in collaboration with the Choiseul Provincial Government, the scope of work includes road alignments, culverts, drainage systems, and bridge structures—crucial components for the township’s future development.
CBTP Manager Isaac Lekelalu said that the contractor has approximately five months remaining to complete the clearance works.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID’s) Transport Infrastructure Division’s Gizo-based engineer continues to provide technical support as requested by the project management and stakeholders on the ground.
A similar contract for clearance and rehabilitation of Lot 1, from the junction to Ngalivuli Road (14 km), is nearing completion by FT Builders and Civil Works.
The MID Safeguards Unit also supported the establishment of the project’s Community Advisory Committee (CAC) last year, comprising chiefs, women, youth representatives, and landowners from the bay area. The CAC will serve as the primary liaison on the ground to help manage grievances, disseminate information, and facilitate community participation throughout the project’s lifecycle.
CBTP has been declared a national government project by the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT)—a milestone towards relocating Taro Town to the mainland. This initiative represents a pioneering effort in the Pacific region, addressing climate change challenges and urban expansion to accommodate Taro Island residents and future development.
