Sealing works along the seaside section of the Yacht Club Junction on Mendana Avenue have just been completed, and the upgraded road section is now reopened to vehicular traffic and public use.
Yacht Club Junction Sealing Works Finished; Final Road Sections Underway
The transport infrastructure management services division of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is pleased to announce that sealing works along the seaside section of the Yacht Club Junction on Mendana Avenue have just been completed, and the upgraded road section is now reopened to vehicular traffic and public use.
This junction has been closed since past weeks, giving time for the contractor to carry out reinforced pavement works, given this section’s crucial turning point for heavy vehicles and business operations.
Construction activities will now focus on the remaining sections that are ready for sealing at the Heritage Park (HP) Roundabout, the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) intersection, and the final road strip between the Hot Bread Kitchen Roundabout and the Honiara City Council Roundabout.
Due to the nature of the works, this final section will be constructed under carriageway closure conditions. One carriageway will remain open and rerouted acting as a two-way single carriageway to maintain traffic flow. Traffic for the west and east eastbound will be merged into a single lane through the work zone.
Given the limited availability of alternative routes and the high level of activity associated with the Central Market, sea port, shopping centres and fuel storage facilities, traffic congestion during this phase of the project is expected and unavoidable. Road users are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and allow extra travel time.
Drivers and pedestrians are urged to follow all road signs and directions provided by traffic controllers of the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), and the Road Transport Board Taskforce to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, these remaining works are expected to be completed by the end of July 2026.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mike Qaqara, thanked the public for their continued patience and cooperation.
“While these works may cause temporary inconvenience, they are essential to improving road conditions, enhancing public safety, and supporting smoother traffic movement within Honiara City,” Mr Qaqara said.
The road upgrade works were executed under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, a partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands.
