West Honiara/Tandai Highway Road Works Moving Forward with Focus on Rove
3rd December 2025
The ongoing road rehabilitation works for the West Honiara/Tandai Highway are currently focusing on the Rove section. Now that the contractor (China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation) is nearing completion of asphalt paving on the landside section from Rove Bulk Shop to Rifle Range, they will shift to commence on the seaside section from Rove Good View Building to Rove Outback next week, with an expected completion date by the end of this year.
The scope of work includes roadway excavation, subgrade preparation, laying of sub-base and base course materials, construction of bus bays, curbstone and footpath installation, prime coat application, and sealing works.
This will also include work on the Rove Roundabout.
These ongoing roadworks are under the broader road component of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project.
In parallel, the construction team has also advanced eastward with drainage improvements along the main road from Savo Street (Yacht Club intersection) to Commonwealth Street (Solomon Ports intersection), covering approximately 1.7 km from Town Ground to the Honiara City Council Roundabout (Mendana Avenue). The drainage works include installation of drainage pits and stormwater pipes, focusing on the seaside section.
All construction activities are being carried out with strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure the safety of passing vehicles, pedestrians, and the continued access of businesses along these sections.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) continues to provide oversight during this phase and appreciates West Honiara road users, business establishments, and community members for their patience and cooperation as this collaborative project by the Solomon Islands Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) transforms Honiara’s city road infrastructure.
