Urgent Road Repairs and Spot Rehabilitation Begin in Gizo Town to Boost Connectivity and Safety
Urgent road repairs and spot rehabilitation at Gizo Town’s roads and coastal roads commenced last week and will continue for a duration of six months.
This project was funded by the government through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) and undertaken by a local contractor, JED Group, to improve connectivity, safety, and accessibility of key roads within Western Province’s business centre, supporting the town’s development and economic growth.
The works will span approximately 15.47 kilometres, covering the feeder roads from Gizo Primary School to Chinatown, South Seas Evangelical Church (SSEC) Road, Gizo Trunk Road, and sections of the Coastal Road. It will include spot rehabilitation at various locations along the road network.
Western Province Assembly Member and Minister of Works Freedom Tozaka said their administration is thankful for the national government funding allocation to carry out these repair works.
“We will continue to pursue the full rehabilitation,” he said, addressing a long-overdue issue, and the residents and communities have welcomed these road repair works.
The ministry’s transport infrastructure management services division (TIMSD) alongside the provincial team will continue to oversee the progress and adherence to minimum quality standards.
Upcoming projects earmarked for Gizo include the following:
– Maintenance works on Gizo Wharf.
– Collaboration with the World Bank under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) Project for the Gizo Road Sealing Project.
Though budget constraints remain the ministry’s biggest challenges, it remains committed to maintaining the country’s provincial centres’ infrastructure that will support their economic growth.
