The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) conducted its 2024 activity implementation reporting and 2025 activity planning workshop
The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is currently undertaking its annual reporting for year 2024 and activity work planning for year 2025.
Delivering her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Envrionment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) and the Chair of the National Disaster Council (NDC) has retiterated the significant nature of the mandated responsibility of the NDMO, stating that the functions of the office are critical in safeguarding the people of Solomon Islands not only in times of disasters, but also in ensuring disaster preparedness in peace-time.
PS Sulu elaborated that the traditional practice by the NDMO in conduting the office’s annual reporting and planning workshop is an important platform to ensure and maintain alignment to the Ministerial Corporate Plan, the National Development Strategy and the current policy of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT).
The NDC Chairlady recognises the progress made by the NDMO in the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) space and highlight the improved capacity and capability of the office thorugh the progressive development of DRM activities and championing collaboration, coordination and partnerships amongst the various local, regional and international stakeholders and partners.
The Director NDMO, Mr. Jonathan Tafiariki added that in the ever-evolving nature of disasters compounded by the increase effects of the changing climate, the NDMO capacity and capability needs constant updating to ensure it delivers on its mandated roles and responsibilities under the National Disaster Council (NDC) Act and the broader ministerial mandates. The Director highlighted the need for NDMO to maintain collaborative approaches in delivering its ministerial mandates whilst ensuring that it also delivers on its mandate under the NDC.
The annual reporting and planning workshop objectives include;
- Review and discuss matters related to the management and operations of the NDMO.
- Systematically update, review, and document activities implemented in 2024 through a consolidated Annual Report for year 2024.
- Strategically develop the NDMO Activity Work Plan for year
- Review NDMO inputs on MECDM Human Resource Development Plan and Cooperate Plan 2025 – 2027
- Acknowledge NDMO staff and their families for their support in the successful implementation of activities and achievements in 2024.
The workshop is attended by officers from the NDMO National Office in Honiara as well as Provincial Disaster Officers from the Provinces.
The three (3 days) workshops held at Ginger Beach commenced on Wednesday 13th and will conclude on Friday 15th February 2025 with a family get-together as part of the traditional NDMO staff-family bonding and acknowledgement for successful achievements in 2024.
