Strengthening Disaster Preparedness Through International Partnership
The Government of Solomon Islands today received a significant donation of 100 tents and solar light units from the China-Pacific Emergency Supplies Reserve, facilitated by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). This contribution marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between Solomon Islands and China to strengthen disaster preparedness, humanitarian response, and climate resilience.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Hon. Wayne Ghemu, Minister of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the PRC for its continued support.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Solomon Islands, I extend our sincere appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for standing with us in times of need. These supplies will be managed responsibly and deployed where they are needed most, ensuring timely assistance to communities affected by emergencies,” Hon. Ghemu stated.
The Minister also acknowledged the China-Pacific Island Countries Emergency Supplies Reserve, KKMart Shop, and other dedicated partners whose logistical support made the delivery possible.
This latest assistance builds on China’s broader disaster relief contributions to Solomon Islands, including:
- USD 1 million to support the shelter recovery for western and Choiseul Provinces.
- 500,000 SBD for immediate disaster response to cyclone maila
- 40 OBMs valued at 720,000 SBD donated by Jiangsu Province to Western Province for transport of essential supplies.
- 359,000 SBD donated by the Chinese Embassy on behalf of the Red Cross Society of China.
These efforts reflect China’s commitment to building a closer China-Pacific community with a shared future, while reinforcing Solomon Islands’ resilience against tropical cyclones, flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other climate-related hazards.
A statement from the Chinese Embassy says PRC reaffirms its commitment to standing alongside the people of Solomon Islands in times of disaster recovery. Through the China-Pacific Emergency Supplies Reserve, China has provided financial and medical support to strengthen disaster response and community resilience.
The statement says, although the cyclone has passed, China deeply admires the courage and resilience of the people of Solomon Islands and will continue to work together to overcome the challenges and build a stronger and more resilient future for our two peoples
