Solomon Islands law enforcement agencies strengthen border security capabilities

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Law enforcement agencies from the Solomon Islands recently participated in a one-week Joint Border Targeting and Intelligence training at Heritage Park Hotel, aimed at enhancing their capabilities to combat transnational organised crime, trade-based money laundering, and proceeds of crime.

The training, conducted by the Australian Border Force, brought together officials from Immigration, Police, Solomon Islands Financial Intelligence Unit, Biosecurity, Labour, and Customs. It focused on equipping participants with knowledge and skills in border targeting intelligence.

“There is a shift of traditional security threats to organised crimes and trade-based money laundering, making it a complex and significant threat to Solomon Islands’ borders,” said Mr Christopher Akosawa, Acting Director of Immigration.

The training is part of broader initiatives, including the Immigration Border Strategy 2025-2035, National Security Strategy, and Customs Border reforms, aimed at protecting the country’s economy, society, and people.

The law enforcement agencies affirmed their commitment to strengthening border security by establishing a border management system and framework and enhancing policing capabilities.
