
Solomon Islands joins global celebration of the World Environment Day 2026: A Global Call for Climate Action
Around the World, this week is known as the environment week due to the fact that three global events are celebrated within the same week and that is, the World Environment Day (June 5), World Oceans Day (June 8) and Coral Triangle Day (June 9).
The World Environment Day (WED) is also known as the ‘people’s day’ to do something to take care of the environment and the action can be done locally, nationally involving individual actions or a crowd. This year’s World Environment Day 2026, is calling for actions towards climate change. It calls on all of us to set in #NowForClimate.
Solomon Islands will join the global celebration through a series of planned events to be hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management & Meteorology, Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources in close collaboration with other partner stakeholders in Honiara and in the Provinces. Some of the planned events to be hosted in
Honiara and Provinces
- Clean Up Program in Honiara at the following areas – Rove Childrens Park , Ports Area & Point Cruz, Market to Mataniko , Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources coastline and along highway, HCC Area and Vavaya ridge road (3rd June) , Jericho 2 Community ( 6th June)
- Follow the Street talk of World Environment Day & World Oceans Day program posts on Social Media ( Solomons Best)
- Tree Planting at Bloody Ridge National Park (5th June)
- Join the Live Broadcast of the Radio Talk-back Show (7th June)
- Follow MECDM & MFMR social media page for updates and stories of all the local events and celebrations
The Ministry also encourages individuals, communities, organizations, institutions to join this environment campaign by participating in any planned local events, organize any local event and by making daily choices that help protect our environment , ocean and our people for now and future generations.
Simple solutions to protecting our environment , ocean and people includes;
- Choose cleaner ways to move -walk, cycle , carpooling or use public transport
- Switching to energy efficient appliances to reduce emissions
- Choosing more sustainable and healthy lifestyles and meals
- Choose to reduce, reuse and recycle more to minimize waste and keep our environment clean
- Encourage more planting of trees to help clean air, protect water sources, store carbon and sustain biodiversity
- Turn off switches when not using any appliances
- Turn off lights to save energy
- Support Marine Protection by advocating for 30 x 30 ocean protection
- Participate in local beach and waterway clean-ups
- Choose certified sustainable marine products and fishing practices
