SOLOMON ISLANDS AND VANUATU STRENGTHEN REGIONAL AIR CONNECTIVITY – MINISTER KOLOGETO SIGNS LANDMARK AIR SERVICES MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) WITH VANUATU TO EXPAND REGIONAL AVIATION TIES.

In a major development for Pacific sub-regional connectivity, Solomon Islands Minister for Communications and Aviation, Hon. Frederick Kologeto, officially signed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on air services on the 4th of September with his counterpart, the Minister of Education for Vanuatu who signed the MOU on-behalf of Vanuatu Government and the country’s Minister for Infrastructure and Utilities under which their Aviation Department is administered who was not in the country during the date of the MOU signing. The signing ceremony was done in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
The formal signing event, which took place following high-level bilateral discussions and negotiations over the past 6 months, marks a pivotal step in strengthening air connectivity, economic exchange, and easing travel mobility between the two Melanesian neighbor countries and beyond.
The MOU provides an expanded and flexible framework to enhance regulatory cooperation, extend operational networks for designated carriers, and support sustainable growth in regional trade and tourism. By modernizing these air service pathways, both nations aim to address logistical hurdles and foster a more resilient, integrated aviation network across the sub-region.
Further, the MOU provides the basis for the designation of airlines and the operation of agreed air services between the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu in accordance with the applicable laws, regulations and aviation standards of each country.
A notable enhancement to this MOU is the exchange of 6th and 7th Freedom rights for Solomon Islands designated airlines for cargo and passenger services. This added capacity provides opportunity for Solomon Airlines to increase its network reach into Australia and New Zealand markets.
Speaking on the significance of the agreement, Minister Kologeto emphasized that closer skies and stronger institutional ties between the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are essential to unlocking shared economic potential and deepening the enduring cultural bonds uniting their peoples. The Minister further added that Solomon Islands can collaborate with Vanuatu across other sectors beyond civil aviation such as agriculture and tourism.
Both Governments of these two Melanesian countries recognize that reliable and sustainable air services are particularly important for Small Island Developing States such as Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, where air transport plays a critical role in connecting communities, supporting economic activity and facilitating regional engagement.
The signing also demonstrates the commitment of both countries to working together to address the connectivity challenges faced by Pacific Island nations and to promote stronger transport links within the region.
The Government of Solomon Islands welcomes the MOU as a positive development in its ongoing efforts to strengthen international and regional air connectivity and looks forward to working closely with the Government of Vanuatu and relevant aviation authorities to give effect to the agreement.
The Solomon Islands Government remains committed to deepening its bilateral relationship with Vanuatu and advancing practical areas of cooperation that deliver tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
The official delegation that went over to Vanuatu for the signing of this MOU on air service was led by the Honourable Fredrick Kologeto Minister of Communication and Aviation and comprised of MCA’s Permanent Secretary, Director of the Aviation Division, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands (CAASI), the Attorney General and an Officer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
