SIG and Donor Partners dialogue to address cyclone response and fuel price hikes
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – The Government of National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) convened a roundtable meeting with donor partners today to address Cyclone Maila recovery efforts and fuel price increases.
Government representatives, NGOs, SOEs, and aid donors discussed the need for immediate support in:
- Humanitarian and early recovery needs (shelter, water, sanitation, food security)
- Rehabilitating critical infrastructure (education and health facilities)
- Long-term recovery and resilience
The National Response and Early Recovery Plan (NRERP) requires $118.7 million, with 92% currently unfunded. The government has committed $10 million for humanitarian response and is seeking donor support to address the financing gap.
To manage fuel price increases, the cabinet has approved:
- 100% exemption on Import Duties for major fuel importers
- 100% exemption on Sales Tax on fuel
- 50% exemption on Goods Tax on fuel
The government is considering additional measures, including targeted budget support and concessional financing.
