RSIPF Marks International Day for Women in Maritime with Selwyn College Awareness Programme
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) women in the Maritime Department observed the International Day for Women in Maritime on 18 May 2026.
Director of the Maritime Department, Superintendent Nevol Soko, said, “This day recognises and celebrates the important contributions of women across the global maritime industry. The occasion also promotes gender equality and encourages more women and girls to pursue careers in maritime professions.”
The RSIPF Maritime Department, together with Selwyn College, proudly marked this important occasion through an awareness and engagement programme focused on empowering young women and promoting opportunities within the maritime sector.
The RSIPF Maritime Small Boat Coordinator, Senior Constable Jean Babau, alongside the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Small Boat Advisor, attended the event and shared valuable insights with students and staff.
Senior Constable Babau is the first female officer to serve as Small Boat Coordinator within RSIPF Maritime and is highly respected for her dedication, leadership, and experience in maritime operations.
Director Soko said that more than 750 students and staff, led by Selwyn College Principal Edwin Rogumana, participated in presentations highlighting the many career opportunities available for women in maritime, including navigation, marine engineering, deck operations, and ship command roles.
The message throughout the event was clear: opportunities in the maritime sector should never be limited by gender.
Senior Constable Babau also shared her personal journey, speaking openly about the challenges and achievements she has experienced throughout her career. Her inspiring message encouraged students, especially young women, to pursue their goals with confidence, determination, and resilience.
Interactive sessions during the programme also reinforced the importance of maritime safety and the vital role communities play in promoting safety at sea.
Adding further significance to the occasion, three female officers from the RSIPF Maritime Department were at sea carrying out operational duties in key positions as Assistant Navigation Officer, Helmsman, and Seaman, demonstrating the growing role of women in maritime policing and operations.
“The celebration was both educational and inspiring, leaving students with a greater appreciation of the contributions women continue to make within the maritime sector and beyond,” said Director Soko.
