RSDP $1.5 MILLION PROJECT DELIVERED FOR TEMOTU VATUD CONSTITUENCY

RSDP $1.5 MILLION PROJECT DELIVERED FOR TEMOTU VATUD CONSTITUENCY

The Rural Sustainable Development Program (RSDP), a partnership initiative between the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Rural Development (MRD), has continued to transform rural livelihoods with two latest community projects worth $1.5 million handed over to the remote Temotu Vatud Constituency.

The project assistance includes two portable sawmilling machines for the people of Utupua and Vanikoro Islands housing scheme program, as well as construction materials for the constituency’s ongoing climate resilience and mitigation project for communities on Tikopia Island.

Constituency Development Officer (CDO) Justin Tanema received the project supplies on behalf of the Member of Parliament, Honourable Minister Freda Tuki, from the Chinese Embassy representative Counsellor Li Qinghua on March 17, 2026.

Speaking on behalf of Hon. Minister Tuki, CDO Tanema with profound gratitude, acknowledged the PRC government and its people for funding the projects.

“This support will certainly help our communities improve their living standards as well as protect our coastlines, especially in vulnerable islands like Tikopia and Anuta, which are often hit by cyclones and the effects of sea-level rise,” Mr Tanema said.

Mr. Tanema further thanked MRD for its continued technical support, ensuring there is always smooth facilitation of projects to respective constituencies.

Regarding the two projects, CDO Tanema explained that the importance of the portable sawmilling initiative for Utupua and Vanikoro Islands is its alignment with the existing housing improvement program targeting rural communities across the entire constituency.

“We are continuing with our housing support program and these machines will boost the work currently undertaken by communities on the ground. We want sustainable and climate prove housing for our people. Eastern Solomon is a cyclone prone area; thus, it is necessary that we continue to support our communities to achieve this through our work programs.

“The coastal retaining wall project for Tikopia Island is an ongoing development initiative by the constituency to conserve and protect existing coastal sites from soil erosion. It is also part of the constituency’s preparedness program in response to the growing impacts of climate change.”

“Tikopia and Anuta Islands are the most vulnerable islands to climate impacts. Every cyclone season, at least one of the many tropical disturbances is likely to affect these islands.

“It is therefore vitally important to implement such preparedness programs to protect the lives of our rural people and communities when disasters strike. These constituency resilience actions aim to mitigate the impacts of ongoing climate change that pose risks and dangers to the lives of our rural communities,” Mr Tanema highlighted.

He assured the PRC Embassy office and the MRD that materials for these two sub-projects will be used only for their intended purpose, adding that shipment of materials to their designated project sites in the constituency will be scheduled at an appropriate time, considering Vatud’s geographical conditions.

Counsellor Li Qinghua of the Chinese Embassy in her remarks congratulated TVC and the beneficiaries on receiving the project.

She highlighted China’s commitment to supporting Solomon Islands’ socio-economic development through small but effective projects like RSDP.

Ms. Li said the handover demonstrates strong cooperation between China and Solomon Islands and strengthens their bilateral ties.

She explained that RSDP aims to boost social and economic progress in the country and further emphasized China’s ongoing commitment to providing capacity-building and knowledge-sharing through training programs to help the Solomon Islands develop and prosper.

She also shared China’s success in lifting 800 million people out of poverty and expressed hope to share this experience with the Solomon Islands.

“I believe that with the support of the government and people, we can achieve poverty reduction,” she said.

Ms Li added that RSDP is more than a project; it’s a partnership focused on empowering rural communities to become self-reliant.

She stressed the importance of working together to ensure projects are properly implemented and benefit rural communities.

Permanent Secretary of MRD, John Misite’e continued to highlight the recognition by the Solomon Islands Government of the PRC’s ongoing support for the people of Solomon Islands through the RSDP and its efforts to improve lives in the Solomon Islands.

PS Misite’e acclaimed PRC’s trust in the MRD to implement the partnership program and describing it a success of the national government’s collaboration with PRC.

PS Misite’e also extends gratitude to Honourable Minister Tuki, MP for her firm leadership and continued support of the government’s rural development policies in her constituency.

The RSDP is a partnership program between the PRC and the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Rural Development. Since 2023, China has actively supported RSDP, which is proposal-based and implemented by MRD in partnership with the Chinese Embassy.

The program aligns with China’s broader Global Development Initiative, including the Belt and Road Initiative, and supports Solomon Islands’ National Development Strategy (NDS) 2016–2035.

The RSDP primarily targets rural and semi-urban communities, aiming to improve social and economic infrastructure, promote income-generating activities, and address issues such as food security and climate resilience.
