Road Relief in Action: MID Mobilizes Contractors to Stabilize Key Routes

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) Transport Infrastructure Management Division (TIMSD) has intensified its road relief program despite the challenges posed by the current cyclone and wet season.
Local contractors were deployed last night to execute grading, resurfacing, and preparation works. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to stabilize Honiara’s road network while long-term rehabilitation projects are finalized.
The overnight operations focused on several high-traffic zones:
- Vura 1 & 2: Grading works for Vura 1 and 2. Vura 3 is next to prioritize drainage and culvert repairs before sealing begins.
- Mendana Avenue: Grading and resurfacing using basecourse materials are underway to keep the Point Cruz to Honiara City Council (HCC) stretch safe. This serves as a temporary measure while awaiting full rehabilitation by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
- Hibiscus Road: Resurfacing is in progress in preparation for asphalt sealing. TIMSD is currently mapping solutions for drainage easements blocked by buildings.
- Panatina-Tanakake Roads: Relief works commenced last night to address deteriorating surface conditions.
- Kohi (Tanaeba) Bridge: Reconnection works are imminent; a contractor will be on-site as soon as administrative paperwork is finalized.
To complement the physical relief works, the Road Transport Board Taskforce is rolling out traffic control measures. These measures aim to reduce peak-hour congestion and eliminate unnecessary delays along the main highway.
“While budget constraints remain a challenge, we are prioritizing the most critical areas first to ensure the public can move safely.”
Progress is highly dependent on weather conditions. While the wet season requires strategic timing, the commitment to the “grind” remains a priority.
Further relief works and repairs are scheduled for other road networks within the city boundary and the provinces.
“We thank the public for their continued patience and remind all motorists to drive safely and adhere to temporary traffic signs near work zones,” the TIMSD statement said.
