Road Marking Works Underway Along Mbarande – Henderson Road, Guadalcanal Province
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), advises the public that road marking works are currently underway along the Mbarande – Henderson Road in Guadalcanal Province.
The road marking activities, which commenced from Mbarande and are progressing towards Henderson, form part of ongoing road improvement works aimed at enhancing visibility for motorists, improving traffic management, and increasing overall road safety for all road users along the corridor.
The works include the application of centreline markings, edge lines, pedestrian crossings, and other road safety markings designed to guide motorists and improve driving conditions, particularly during night-time travel and adverse weather conditions.
Road users are advised to exercise caution when travelling through active work areas, observe all temporary traffic management measures, and follow instructions from traffic controllers and work crews on site.
The Ministry has also noted incidents of vandalism involving temporary road signs installed along the corridor during various stages of construction. These signs provide important safety information to motorists, pedestrians, and other road users, including warnings of roadworks, changes in traffic conditions, and potential hazards ahead.
Damaging, removing, or tampering with road signs creates unnecessary risks and can compromise the safety of both the public and construction workers. The Ministry reminds all road users that these signs are installed for their protection and play a critical role in ensuring safe travel through work zones.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr. Mike Qaqara, said the road marking works and road safety infrastructure are essential investments in improving the country’s transport network.
“Road markings and road signs are critical components of road safety. They guide motorists, alert pedestrians to potential dangers, and help prevent accidents. Unfortunately, we have observed instances where temporary road signs have been vandalised or removed during construction activities. We strongly urge members of the public to respect these signs, as they are there to protect lives and ensure the safety of all road users,” Mr Qaqara said.
Mr Qaqara further noted that permanent traffic and road safety signs will soon be installed along the Mbarande – Henderson Road as part of the completed road improvement works.
“We ask communities, motorists, and all road users to take ownership of this infrastructure and help protect it. Respecting road signs is a shared responsibility and contributes to a safer road environment for everyone. These signs are public assets installed for the benefit of all road users and should be treated with care and respect,” he added.
The Ministry remains committed to improving road infrastructure and ensuring safer, more reliable transport networks for communities throughout Guadalcanal Province and the Solomon Islands.
The road upgrade works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a partnership between the Solomon Islands Government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
