Road Construction Works – Hot Bread Roundabout to HCC

Road construction works have recently commenced along Mendana Avenue, from the Hot Bread Roundabout to the Honiara City Council (HCC) Roundabout, and are expected to continue for the next approximate two months subject to weather conditions. Initial activity is focused along the seaside carriageway and, once complete, will transfer to the landside carriageway.

Current works include the construction of a road pipe crossing at the east landside section of Hot Bread Roundabout, drainage system works in front of the Old Guadalcanal Headquarters and pavement works from Central Market to HCC Roundabout.

The public is advised that traffic flow adjustments will be implemented to provide sufficient space for construction activities. Work areas will be properly barricaded, with traffic signs and safety devices installed prior to the commencement of works.

Pedestrian walkways and designated crossing points will be provided at selected locations. Traffic Controllers from the Contractor, Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Road Transport Board (RTB) and the Honiara City Council (HCC) will be stationed on site to assist and direct pedestrians and motorists around the cordoned-off worksite areas.

From just a practical construction perspective the closure on one of the two road carriageways is unavoidable during road pavement & surfacing works and the contractor is making best efforts to complete works at the earliest opportunity in order to mitigate associated traffic congestion which is also unavoidable given the limited opportunity for alternative detours along the current section of Works.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Allan Lilia, said pedestrians and motorists are advised to follow the directions of Traffic Controllers and Police Officers at all times while works are in progress.

“Due to lane narrowing, traffic congestion is expected. Members of the public are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly when entering the CBD area,” Mr Lilia said.

Temporary bus terminals for eastbound passengers are located within the MID Works Compound. Pedestrians are also reminded to use only designated crossing points to ensure public safety and minimise traffic congestion.

The completion of the road upgrade works is expected by the end of July 2026.

The upgrade works are being carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a joint initiative of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government.
