Ambassador of Finland to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Mr. Arto Haapea presenting his remarks to the Governor General at the government house yesterday.
The non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of Finland to the Solomon Islands, His Excellency Mr. Arto Haapea, officially presented his letter of credence to the Governor General, His Excellency Reverend David Tiva Kapu, on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Upon receiving the letter of credentials, Governor General Kapu warmly welcomed Ambassador Haapea who is based in Canberra, Australia to Solomon Islands.
The Governor General highlighted the enduring relationship between Finland and Solomon Islands, despite the geographical distance.
“Though our nations are far apart, we share a long history of cooperation based on mutual respect. We recognize Finland’s significant contributions to global development, including your country’s support through the European Union for key initiatives here in the Solomon Islands,” he said.
Governor General Kapu further noted that Ambassador Haapea’s appointment comes at a time filled with both opportunities and challenges.
“I am confident that your tenure will further strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation. We look forward to working closely with you to continue advancing our shared goals—closing the global economic inequality gap, combating climate change, addressing poverty and diseases, and building a fair, multilateral, rules-based world order that is just, equal, and guided by international law,” he remarked.
Ambassador Haapea expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and acknowledged the positive relationship between Finland and the Solomon Islands, which is rooted in mutual respect.
“The Solomon Islands is a nation rich in natural resources, traditions, and cultures. As Ambassador, I will do my utmost to promote trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections between our countries,” he said.
“It is my privilege to represent Finland in the Solomon Islands during this time of both opportunities and challenges. I look forward to working with you and your administration to strengthen relations between our nations,” Ambassador Haapea added.
Finland has been a strong supporter of initiatives in the Solomon Islands through the European Union.
Finland, a Nordic country located in Northern Europe, borders Sweden, Norway, and Russia. Gaining autonomy from Russia in 1917 and becoming an independent republic in 1919, Finland is renowned for its world-class education system, high standard of living, and robust social welfare programs. Today, it is recognized for its political stability, innovation, and commitment to sustainability.
