Police arrest a man for raping a person with a disability in WP
Police in Gizo have arrested a 35-year-old male suspect for allegedly raping a 25-year-old disabled female victim in Western Province (WP) recently.
The rape incident had occurred at a village in Marovo Lagoon between the months of April and July way back in 2023.
It was alleged that the victim went to do her laundry when the suspect approached and asked her, but the victim refused.
The suspect then threatened, causing the victim to become frightened and follow him. The suspect also has a previous conviction of rape and common assault.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province Superintendent Wilken Miriki said such behaviour is unacceptable in our communities, as it can create fear and insecurity, particularly among vulnerable members of the community.
PPC Miriki said police will not tolerate such behaviour. Anyone who has experienced a similar incident or has been threatened is encouraged to come forward and report the matter to the nearest police station.
“Your information can help police take appropriate action against offenders and make our communities safer,” said PPC Miriki.
Mr Miriki said parents and guardians have an important responsibility to protect their daughters from potential perpetrators. Avoid sending children, particularly those who are vulnerable, such as persons with disabilities.
He said children and vulnerable persons need special protection and guidance. We must remain vigilant and take reasonable precautions to ensure their safety. Let us work together as parents, guardians and members of the community to strengthen the protection of our daughters and keep them safe from harm.
The defendant was arrested and dealt with and charged with one count of rape contrary to sections 136F (1) (a) & (b) of the Penal Code (Cap 26), as amended by the Penal Code (Amendment) (Sexual Offences) Act 2016.
