PM Manele reassures gov’t support for SIBC independence

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has addressed concerns about the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation’s (SIBC) independence, stating that government funding is not a means to control its voice.

Speaking at the World Media Freedom Day event today, Manele emphasised the SIBC’s vital role in national safety and unity, uniting scattered communities across the archipelago.

“The SIBC is a lifeline, and our priority is to ensure it remains funded, strong, and accessible to every citizen,” Manele said.

He clarified that financial support does not equate to editorial control, guaranteeing the SIBC’s journalists can report without interference.

Manele reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the SIBC’s editorial independence, respecting its role in public service, and supporting journalists in a rapidly changing digital environment.

He acknowledged challenges faced by journalists, including resource constraints and harassment, particularly affecting women in the media.

The Prime Minister’s remarks aim to reassure the public and media practitioners of the government’s commitment to a free and independent SIBC, serving the people of Solomon Islands.
