PM Manele reaffirms Gov’t support for media freedom on World Press Freedom Day

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to press freedom, emphasising the crucial role of the media in Solomon Islands’ democracy.

Speaking at the World Media Freedom Day event in Honiara today, Manele highlighted the importance of journalism in promoting peace, human rights, development, and national security.

“The media carries a unique burden in protecting peace, for while words can build a nation, they can also tear it apart,” Manele said.

He praised the media for connecting citizens to information, holding those in power accountable, and contributing to national understanding.

Manele also addressed concerns about the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), stating that government funding is not a means to control its voice, but a commitment to public service.

“True press freedom is not measured by the absence of government support, but by the presence of editorial independence,” he said.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by journalists, including resource constraints and harassment, and encouraged the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) to engage with the government through established channels to address industry challenges.

Manele emphasised the importance of accuracy and balance in international reporting, noting that they directly impact development and strategic partnerships.

He welcomed fair and balanced assessments that reflect the country’s current realities.

The event was attended by government officials, media industry representatives, development partners and students, highlighting the significance of press freedom in Solomon Islands’ democratic journey.
