PM Manele hails media’s role in shaping Solomon Islands’ narrative

Honiara, Solomon Islands – Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has praised journalists and media professionals for their dedication to telling the stories of Solomon Islands, as the country approaches 50 years of independence.

Speaking at the World Media Freedom Day event, Manele acknowledged the media’s vital role in recording the nation’s history and contributing to national understanding.

“The pen and the lens remain in your hands,” Manele said, emphasising the media’s responsibility in shaping the country’s narrative for future generations.

He recognised journalists’ commitment to truth, peace, nation-building, and security, often without seeking recognition themselves.

Manele highlighted the importance of press freedom, not just as a right to speak, but as a responsibility to inform, protect truth, strengthen trust, and preserve unity.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by media professionals and expressed gratitude for their dedication to telling the stories of Solomon Islands’ communities and institutions.

The Prime Minister’s remarks were a nod to the critical role the media plays in Solomon Islands’ democratic journey, as the country looks towards its next 50 years.
