Noro Township Road Construction Wraps Up Soon

The Noro Township Road improvement project in Western Province will be officially completed in the first quarter of next year, with an overall completion rate of 95% as of this week.
Currently, installation of road signs has been successfully completed by the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Installation of road barriers is 90% finished, and work is underway on the road markings, which are approximately 30% complete.
The project includes the construction of approximately 10.2 kilometers of roadway, comprising roughly 5.2 km of asphalt concrete and 4.1 km of Double Bituminous Surface Treatment (DBST). This road improvement project has engaged a total of 70 laborers, most of whom are locals from surrounding communities. Their involvement has provided valuable skills and experience and also helped support their families—a shared benefit for the wider Western Province.
The official completion date for this project is set towards the end of January 2026.

This road improvement for the country’s tuna town forms part of the financing arrangement under the World Bank’s second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP 2) and is being implemented through a collaborative undertaking by the Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), a project support team, and the international design consultant, Egis Asia Company Limited.
Furthermore, this contractor has also carried out minor road upgrade works in Munda in preparation for the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Summit in early September this year.
Other active projects under SIRAP 2 include four new bridges (Kolefe 1 and 2, Bira, and Su’u) in Malaita Province; upgrades to airports: Honiara, Munda, Santa Cruz, and Suavanao; and investments in air navigation systems for Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces.
Upcoming road projects under SIRAP 2 additional financing include repairs on Malaita road networks that incorporate climate-resilient features for the section from Baratolo to Atori (21 km) and sealing of 12 km of the West Kwara’ae/North road stretch from Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction to Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
