New Zealand High Commission Hands Over SBD 328,748 to enhance Solomon Islands’ Disaster Management Operations
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – 17 April 2026 – The New Zealand High Commission has officially announced a funding package of SBD 328,748 to provide critical operational support to the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).
The funding, provided through the Emergency High Commission Fund, is aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities. This support follows a proposal submitted by the NDMO earlier this week to the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology.
The total funding of SBD 328,748 will be utilized across three primary operational areas. These include response facilities SBD147,898 to establish entry points, reception, departure areas, Staging areas and On-Site Operation and Coordination Centers (OSOCC). SBD142,600 will go towards enhancing logistics in Honiara and the staging area in Munda, Western Province and the remaining SBD38,250 will go towards supporting the deployment of the National Emergency Response Team (NERT)
New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Jonathan Curr expressed his support for the initiative, noting that the High Commission looks forward to the successful completion of the project. The agreement requires that all project activities be completed by 30 June 2026.
Meanwhile, Chair of N-DOC Jonathan Tafiariki acknowledged the government of New Zealand through its High Commission Office in Honiara for the timely assistance.
“The support that was officially handed over today by His Excellency Jonathan Curr will go specifically towards NERT deployment and provincial emergency operations for the affected areas.
“Part of it will also go towards supporting the on-site operation centre based in Munda and logistic warehouse operations,” he added.
Chairman Tafiariki on behalf of the Solomon Islands Government, thanked the people and government of New Zealand for upporting the current emergency response operation under NDMO/NEOC.
As part of the grant conditions, the NDMO will ensure that communities benefiting from these funds are aware of the support provided by New Zealand. This partnership underscores New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to supporting disaster management and resilience in the Solomon Islands.
