National Emergency Operation Center Response Update on Tropical Cyclone Maila

The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), through the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), remains on Full Activation during the Easter long weekend in response to Tropical Cyclone Maila and the prevailing adverse weather conditions affecting the country.
At the provincial level, three priority Provincial Emergency Operations Centres (PEOCs) Western, Choiseul, and Isabel—continue to operate on full activation. These Provincial Emergency operation centers are actively coordinating response efforts, closely monitoring impacts, and consolidating situation reports from communities and relevant stakeholders. All other PEOCs remain on standby and are prepared to escalate to full activation should conditions deteriorate.
The National Disaster Operations Committee (N-DOC) convened its first meeting on Monday, 06 April 2026, at the NDMO to receive briefings and deliberate forward planning priorities for the cyclone response. The committee emphasized the importance of proactive planning, timely information sharing, and strengthened coordination across all levels of government.
Response efforts continue to be guided by the National Disaster Arrangements as stipulated in the National Disaster Management Plan 2018, with national coordination led by NDMO while provincial authorities maintain responsibility for frontline response operations. This ensures that decisions are both strategic at the national level and responsive to realities on the ground.
Wednesday 08 April, the Chair of the National Disaster Council, Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology and the Chair of the National Disaster Operations Committee (N-DOC), Director, NDMO convened a high-level briefing with the Cabinet Caucus Committee to provide an update on the current situation and outline the NDMO’s ongoing response and forward planning for Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The briefing highlighted the status of national and provincial response operations, key operational priorities, and emerging risks, while also emphasizing the need for continued government support to ensure timely and effective implementation of response measures.
The Cabinet Caucus Committee acknowledged the update and will consider the recommendations as part of ongoing national decision-making.
The N-DOC is scheduled to meet daily to review the Tropical Cyclone Maila Response Plan, assess operational gaps, and finalize key recommendations for submission to National Disaster Council and Cabinet. This process is critical to ensure that response actions remain well-coordinated, adequately resourced, and aligned with emerging needs.
Initial reports indicate that impacts have been reported in South Choiseul, particularly along the coastal areas from Moli to Posarae. In the Western Province, affected areas include Ranoga, Shortlands, Redova, Simbo and Gizo Island, as well as the Wanderer Bay area in Guadalcanal Province and some areas of Central Province.
Preliminary information suggests that these areas have experienced varying degrees of strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough sea conditions, which may have resulted in localized coastal flooding, and potential damage to housing and small-scale infrastructure. Access to some communities may be limited due to rough seas and weather conditions, which is currently affecting assessment and reporting processes.
Provincial Emergency Operation Centres, together with frontline responders, are continuing to collect and verify information, with situation updates being progressively relayed to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for coordination, analysis, and response planning.
