The Ministry of Rural Development (MRD) through its Communication and Public Relations Unit (CPRU) has commenced its weekly radio awareness program for this year on the national broadcaster (SIBC) last week (Tuesday 17 May, 2022).
The radio program is aimed at increasing community awareness by informing and educating people about the core functions and mandates of the ministry and the services it continues to deliver towards improving livelihoods and socio-economic development across the country in our rural areas.
It is a weekly radio program and broadcasted every Tuesday’s evening at 6:15pm on SIBC.
A statement from the Communication and Public Relations Unit of MRD said keeping citizens informed of the functions of the ministry and the services that the government continues to render through MRD to our rural people in the 50 constituency is important.
“Since 80 per cent of the Solomon Islands population are living in rural areas, it is crucial that MRD through its Communication Unit uses the national broadcaster (SIBC) as the tool to reach.”
The statement said that the radio program is one of the various initiatives that the MRD Communication Unit is effecting purposely to increase community awareness on the key responsibilities of the ministry and at the same time raises its visibility.
“MRD encourages listeners or people to follow the program which broadcasted every Tuesday’s evening at 6:15pm as the program provided an opportunity for Constituency Offices to enlighten us on how they uses RCDF to support development initiatives in their own constituency’s, share their achievements and inform everyone (us) about the development programmes or projects that they are implementing in their respective constituencies with the RCDF support to improve livelihoods in our rural areas.”
MRD is one of the 24 ministries within the Solomon Islands Government (SIG) machinery. Established on the 28th September, 2007, the ministry’s core mandates as contained under Legal Notice 164 in accordance with the Constitution of Solomon Islands is to oversee the effective planning and implementation of Government’s Rural Development Policies.
