MNPDC Minister and PRC Ambassador discuss Development Cooperation

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to Solomon Islands, H.E. Cai Weiming, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for National Planning and Development
Coordination (MNPDC), Peter Kenilorea Jr, on Monday (22nd June 2026).

Ambassador Cai is among dignitaries who paid courtesy visits and held meetings with
Minister Kenilorea since he was appointed to head the Ministry on 17th May following the election of Prime Minister Mathew Wale.

During the visit, Ambassador Cai and Minister Kenilorea discussed a wide range of issues.

Minister Kenilorea welcomed the meeting describing it as very positive.

He said one of the main things he raised with Ambassador Cai was for the PRC to work closely with the MNPDC moving forward.

As the Ministry responsible for coordinating development support, Minister Kenilorea said MNPDC serves as the focal point for all development partners.

He said good coordination of development program and plans is important to avoid the
duplication of priorities and it ensures resources are used efficiently in line with the Government for Reform, Empowerment, Accountability & Transparency (GREAT) Coalition’s efforts toward the development of this nation.

Minister Kenilorea highlighted GREAT’s flagship policy of free education and welcomed the fact that some 200 students are currently studying in China.

He commended PRC for its ongoing commitment to local capacity building through training initiatives opened to Solomon Islanders.

“I want to thank the PRC for its development contributions and the support provided to this country over the years,” the MNPDC Minister added.

Ambassador Cai congratulated Minister Kenilorea on his assumption of office and stated that since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Solomon Islands in 2019, the bilateral relations between the two countries have made significant progress on the
basis of the one-China principle.

“China is willing to work with the Solomon Islands’ new government to further enhance the bilateral cooperation in all sectors and to jointly build a China-Solomon Islands community with a shared future in the new era,” Ambassador Cai said.
