MFMR Electrician Undergoes Regional Refrigeration Training in PNG

Honiara, 20 November 2025: MFMR Electrician Paul Junior Jeke is currently in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, taking part in a two-week regional refrigeration and electrical training program designed to strengthen technical capacity across Pacific fisheries agencies.

The training, held at the National Fisheries College from 17 to 28 November 2025, is funded by the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan (OFCF). It brings together technicians from around the region to improve their ability to maintain and repair ice-making machines and other essential refrigeration equipment used in fisheries centres.

During the first week, participants are focusing on electrical theory, covering foundational knowledge required for the safe operation and troubleshooting of electrical systems commonly used in fisheries infrastructure.

The second week will shift to ice-making machine technology, where trainees will receive hands-on practical sessions on diagnosing faults, servicing components, and ensuring consistent machine performance—skills crucial for preserving fish quality and supporting post-harvest operations.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources says Mr. Jeke’s participation highlights the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen technical capacity and ensure that fisheries facilities across the country are supported by well-trained personnel.

MFMR also acknowledged OFCF for its continued commitment to developing technical skills in the Pacific’s fisheries sector.
