Mendana Avenue Upgrade Reaches Key Milestone with Seaside Carriageway now open along Full Length
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), advises the public that both traffic lanes, along the seaside carriageway between the Honiara City Council (HCC) Roundabout and the Hot Bread Roundabout, were reopened on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, marking another milestone in the ongoing upgrading of Mendana Avenue.
The inner lane on the landside section has also reopened to westbound traffic, while the outer lane remains closed to enable the contractor to complete concreting works on associated roadside features such as new bus bays and parking areas. Once the concrete has reached the required curing strength, the road will be progressively reopened for two-lane traffic as construction advances eastward from the Hot Bread Roundabout.
Under the revised traffic arrangements, westbound vehicles will travel through the inner lane only, with safety cones and other traffic control devices in place to guide motorists safely through the work zone. Parking is not permitted within the construction area; however, loading and unloading will be allowed in sections of the outer lane where construction activities are not taking place. The ITA Junction remains closed to traffic, and motorists travelling from Vavae Ridge are advised to use the Hot Bread Junction, where the new concrete paved roundabout also reopened on 4 August 2026. Eastbound vehicles will continue to use the seaside carriageway under a two-way traffic arrangement.
The temporary eastbound bus terminal will remain at the MID Works Compound, while the westbound bus terminal will continue operating from behind the Honiara City Council Building until further notice or until the completion of the road works. Given favourable weather conditions it is currently targeted to complete roadside works by or before end-August 2026 with associated works to install road signs & markings continuing into September 2026.
Pedestrian safety continues to be a priority throughout the construction period. Designated pedestrian walkways and crossing points have been provided at selected locations, and members of the public are strongly encouraged to use the pedestrian underpass and designated crossing points at all times. These measures are intended to minimise traffic disruption while ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists. Traffic Controllers engaged by the contractor, together with officers from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and the Road Transport Board (RTB), will remain on site to assist road users and maintain the safe and orderly flow of traffic.
Access to businesses located within the construction zone will continue to be maintained wherever practicable and managed according to prevailing site conditions to minimise inconvenience to business operators and their customers.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mr. Mike Qaqara, thanked the public for their continued patience and cooperation throughout the construction period.
“The reopening of this section is another important step towards the completion of the Mendana Avenue upgrade. While some work remains, we are pleased to restore access to motorists and improve traffic flow through one of Honiara’s busiest corridors. We ask everyone to continue exercising patience, follow the directions of Traffic Controllers, and observe all traffic signs as we work to safely complete the remaining sections of the project,” Mr. Qaqara said.
Mr. Qaqara also acknowledged the cooperation of businesses, commuters and residents who have been affected by the construction works, noting that their understanding has contributed significantly to the successful delivery of the project.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development thanks motorists, pedestrians, business owners and the wider public for their continued patience, understanding and cooperation as construction progresses. Road users are reminded to exercise caution, obey all traffic signs, and follow the directions of Traffic Controllers when travelling through the work area.
The Mendana Avenue upgrade forms part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), which is improving Honiara’s road network to provide safer, more efficient and climate-resilient transport infrastructure. The works are being delivered by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) with funding support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in partnership with the Solomon Islands Government.
