MECDM Conducts Monitoring of Mining Operations in Choiseul Province
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), through its Environment and Conservation Division (ECD), has concluded a two-day compliance monitoring exercise of Siruka Mining in Choiseul Province, conducted from 22 to 23 April 2026.
The monitoring program forms part of the ECD’s ongoing mandate to inspect current mining operations in Siruka, located in northeast Choiseul Province.
The ECD monitoring team, led by Senior Environment Officer Mr. Desmond Maedia, stated that the purpose of the inspection was to assess mitigation measures implemented across various aspects of the mining project. This ensures that project activities comply with the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and relevant legal safeguard requirements. The team also emphasized the importance of the company working closely with resource owners to ensure early response to environmental issues and to address them promptly, thereby minimizing risks to the surrounding environment.
During the monitoring process, the Human Resource Manager of Solomon Nickel Mining Company Limited (SNMCL), Mr. Ariel Malaiyo, stated that the company prioritizes compliance with the legal frameworks of the Solomon Islands, particularly the Environment Act 1998.
He further noted that, as a mining operator, the company recognizes the environmental risks involved and takes them seriously. SNMCL continues to implement mitigation measures outlined in its Environmental Management Plan and regularly submits quarterly reports to the Environment and Conservation Division. These reports provide updates on operational activities and the mitigation measures undertaken.
The company remains committed to addressing environmental issues, ensuring that standard safeguards are practiced, and complying with environmental laws while promoting sustainable development.
Despite ongoing challenges, the Ministry remains committed to safeguarding the environment while supporting sustainable development.
