
Matangi Ward 7 By-Election Set for 7 October 2026

Hon. Lazarus Alfred Rina signs the official notice declaring 7 October 2026 as the by-election date for Matangi Ward 7, Rennell and Bellona Province.
The Solomon Islands Electoral Office (SIEO) announces that the Provincial Assembly by-election for Matangi Electoral Ward 7 of Rennell and Bellona Province will be held on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.
The election date has been formally fixed by the Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Hon. Lazarus Alfred Rina, under Section 12(2) of the Provincial Assemblies and Honiara City Council Electoral Act 2023 (No. 14 of 2023). This legal notice officially triggers the electoral process for the by-election.
In accordance with the Provincial Assemblies and Honiara City Council Election Regulations 2024, the Baghani Kindy in Matangi Community, located in Matangi Ward in Rennell and Bellona Province, is the official nomination place where nominations for the Matangi Ward by-election may be made in person.
Nomination opens on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, and closes on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
Further, under Regulation 11(1) of the Provincial Assemblies and Honiara City Council Election Regulations 2024, the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Jasper Highwood Anisi, has appointed Mr. Steve Lemuel Rau’ona Houani’au as the Returning Officer for Matangi Ward. Acting under Regulation 12(1) of the same Regulations, the Returning Officer has appointed Mr. Temenga Angiki as the Assistant Returning Officer for Matangi Ward.
Intending candidate who wishes to contest in this by-election are encouraged to see the Returning Officer at the nomination centre to complete and submit their nomination within the period of nomination.
Preparations for the by-election are underway, with the SIEO coordinating closely with stakeholders to ensure the process is conducted in full compliance with the electoral legal framework.
The SIEO encourages all eligible voters in Matangi Ward 7 to participate actively in this important democratic event and exercise their right to elect their representative to the Rennell and Bellona Provincial Assembly.
