MAL ADVISORY COUNCIL (ANAC) ESTABLISH TO DRIVE ARGICULTURAL TRANSFORMATION
The Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) has formally established the Agriculture National Advisory Council (ANAC) — a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening leadership, coordination, and modernization across the agriculture sector.
Approved by Cabinet on 27 June 2024, ANAC was formally launched by the Minister of MAL Hon. Franklyn Derek Wasi and UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Prof. Raluca together with members of the Council, at the Heritage Park Hotel, on Monday 27th October in Honiara, as the ministry staff, donor partners, stakeholders and farmers and forms four agriculture students of St Nicholas College and St John School gathered to celebrated this year’s world food day.
MAL Permanent Secretary Dr. Samson Viulu said, the launch marks a new era of policy direction and collaboration designed to reposition agriculture as a driver of growth, food security, and prosperity for all Solomon Islanders.
He explained ANAC will serve as the central advisory body to MAL, providing high-level technical, strategic, and policy advice to support a modern, vibrant, and inclusive agriculture sector.
Also launched during the event was the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) Corporate Plan 2025–2028, signifying a major step forward in the ministry’s commitment to transform the country’s agriculture sector.
Under the theme “Transforming Agriculture for a Sustainable Future,” the new Corporate Plan provides a clear roadmap to guide agricultural development and modernization over the next four years. It aligns with the Solomon Islands Government’s national vision for inclusive economic growth, food security, and improved rural livelihoods.
Speaking during his keynote address, the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Hon. Franklyn Derek Wasi highlighted that the Corporate Plan sets out the Ministry’s vision for a dynamic agriculture sector that drives economic growth, strengthens food and nutrition security, and promotes prosperity for all Solomon Islanders.
“This plan is a reflection of our renewed commitment to modernize agriculture, empower our farmers, and ensure the sustainability of our natural resources,” said the Minister. “We are focused on transforming the sector to become more resilient, inclusive, and productive in the years ahead.”
The Corporate Plan 2025–2028 outlines eight key strategic focus areas that will guide MAL’s work:
- Reform and Restructuring for Efficient Service Delivery
- Increased Agricultural Productivity
- Strengthened Food Security and Nutrition
- Economic Growth and Rural Development
- Sustainable and Climate-Smart Agriculture
- Biosecurity and Livestock Protection
- Strong Stakeholder Partnerships
- Effective Monitoring, Evaluation, and Accountability
These strategic areas are anchored in MAL’s mission to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience through innovation, partnerships, and sustainable resource management.
The Corporate Plan also emphasizes the importance of collaboration with provincial governments, development partners, the private sector, and farming communities to drive collective impact and innovation in agriculture.
“Empowering farmers, securing food, and building resilience for the Solomon Islands — this is not just our motto, it is our shared mission,” said Minister Wasi.
