Makira Ulawa Province Hosts Key Consultation on Federal Constitution Cost-Benefit Analysis

Kirakira, Solomon Islands – The Premier of Makira Ulawa Province, Honourable Stanley Siapu, has officially opened a provincial consultation on the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) of the 2018 Draft Federal Constitution at the Women’s Resource Centre in Kirakira.

The consultation, held on Friday, 1 May 2026, brings together officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, members of the CBA technical team, and provincial leaders to discuss the implications of adopting a federal system of government in Solomon Islands.

In his opening address, Premier Siapu emphasised the importance of informed and inclusive dialogue in shaping the country’s governance future.

“This consultation comes at a very important time in our nation’s development journey,” he stated. “The transition to a federal system is a significant undertaking – one that presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly for provinces such as Makira Ulawa.”

The Premier highlighted the need for careful consideration of the financial, administrative, and developmental impacts of federalism, stressing that leaders must examine how changes will affect administrative capacity, financial sustainability, infrastructure development, and community well being.

The consultation is part of a broader national effort to evaluate the feasibility and implications of adopting a federal system of government in Solomon Islands.

The Premier expressed appreciation to the CBA team for bringing the consultation process to the Province.
