Maintenance Progress on East Honiara’s Unsealed Roads
Routine road maintenance works on selected unsealed sections in East Honiara are progressing steadily, with the Central Project Implementation Unit (CPIU) of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) closely supervising to ensure the contractor remains on schedule and adheres to quality standards.
Lot 1, contracted to Sustainable Resource Management Limited (SRML), covers five selected unsealed feeder roads in east Honiara: (1) Zioke Road (Ranadi), (2) Ranadi Crescent, (3) SINU Panatina Campus unsealed road network, (4) Jackson Ridge Road, and (5) MBaranaba Road.
Zioke Road and Ranadi Crescent have since been completed with full grading and base course application meeting project specifications.
SRML’s road crew is now focusing on Jackson Ridge Road, MBaranaba Road, and the SINU Panatina Campus unsealed road n etwork, with grading and placement of base course materials scheduled for the coming days.
Meanwhile, Lot 2, undertaken by AJ Enterprise Limited, includes (1) Gilbert Camp Road (Kobito Loop), (2) April Ridge Road, (3) Gilbert Camp 2, (4) Gilbert Camp 3 Road, and (5) Firehouse Road, with grading and compaction works progressing.
Johnson Donga, job manager for East Honiara road works at CPIU, said AJ Enterprises’ crew will begin applying base course materials in the next phase.
The scope for both contracts also involves vegetation trimming, cleaning side drains, clearing culvert inlets and outlets, and removing blockages to improve surface water flow during rainfall.
Funding for these road maintenance projects is sourced from the government’s Economic Infrastructure Program (EIP), aligned with priorities outlined in the National Transport Plan 2017-2036.
“These contractors were instrumental in relief works prior to the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM) last month that restored access along Tanakake Road, as well as sections of Vura Road and Naha Road,” Mr. Donga said.
He added that they are currently working on contract variation for the Vura and Naha Road contracts, which will depend on the availability of funding for the remainder of the financial year.
Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement (CAUSE II) has pre-identified the Vura Drainage System and Kobito Bridge as their upcoming project sites in East Honiara for rehabilitation.
