Maezama sworn in as Parliamentary Entitlement Commission (PEC) Chair

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – Retired senior Public Servant Mr. Nigel Maezama has been appointed and sworn in as the new Chairperson of the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission (PEC).

Mr. Maezama from Munda in Western Province took his Oaths of Office and Allegiance before the Acting Governor General, Hon. Patterson Oti, at the Government House today.

The Parliamentary Entitlements Commission (PEC) is a constitutional body that administers and determines the salaries and benefits of Members of Parliament (MPs) and other constitutional office-holders.

It is responsible for setting basic salaries, allowances, and pensions, often in response to proposals and public consultation.

The Commission is distinct from the Parliament itself and operates under specific regulations, such as the Members of Parliament (Entitlements) Commission Regulations 1988.

The PEC is responsible for setting the remuneration for Members of Parliament, including basic salaries, allowances, and pensions.

The Commission also establishes a framework that operates through specific regulations to establish the entitlements for MPs and other constitutional offices.

The commission often makes proposals for increases in entitlements and initiates public consultation to gather feedback before making final decisions.

In addition to MPs, the PEC also determines the salaries and entitlements for other office holders, such as Provincial and City Council members.
