Lungga Bridge Area Pollution Highlights Urgent Need for Community Cooperation

It is deeply disappointing to see a massive accumulation of waste at the eastern approach of Lungga Bridge. With AJ Mall prominently in the background, this area is among the first sights greeting visitors and residents entering our city. This level of pollution reflects a serious lack of care and community responsibility.
Currently, the Ministry’s Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division (TIMSD) has two active contractors dedicated to cleaning the East Honiara Highway, from Honiara City Council Roundabout to Henderson Court. However, their efforts are being undermined by ongoing challenges, including drive-by littering: trash thrown out of moving vehicles, polluting our roads and environment, and illegal dumping: household waste being illegally piled in public spaces, creating eyesores and health hazards.
“This situation poses a significant public health hazard and a road safety concern.
“Our road assets and boundaries deserve respect.
“Let’s take pride in our city and work together to keep it clean. Please dispose of your waste responsibly at designated disposal areas,” a statement from the TIMSD said.
It urges Lungga community members, businesses houses, and market vendors to collaborate in tackling this pollution and preserving the cleanliness and safety of East Honiara.
“Proper waste disposal is crucial for our environment, health, and community well-being.”
The Ministry also recognises the ongoing challenges in maintaining the city’s drainage system, which have been worsened by continuous heavy rainfall and expansion needs.
“Improper waste disposal into drains has contributed to blockages along the highway, with Kukum being a classic example.
“We have repeatedly urged communities upstream not to dispose of household waste into waterways during rainy weather to prevent drainage blockages on our roads,” it stated.
Meanwhile, the section of Tandai Highway from White River to Central Market is currently undergoing construction as part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP). Road drainage clean-up and maintenance for the West Side Highway will be contracted out after the project’s completion, anticipated in the middle of this year.
