LiDAR Survey works for the Koehoto Land Recording Initiative is making significant progress as part of Solomon Islands Government effort to modernise land recording and mapping systems across the country. Following consultations with relevant neighbouring regions of Suta, Horohana, Lauvatale and Bahomea, Koehoto has advanced into collecting data with the use of LIDAR to capture highly accurate topographic and spatial data to support the land recording and mapping of land boundaries process of four (4) tribes within the Koehoto region.
According to project Government officials stated that the data collected through the Lidar Works for Koehoto will assist in identifying customary land boundaries and supporting future land administration processes. It is also an important step towards modernising land administration by using geo-spatial data to upgrade mapping information. The data sets collected will greatly assist landowners, investors and communities by providing reliable foundation from which land decisions can be made.
Tribal landholding groups are also part of the exercise and have been encouraged to collaborate with the Survey team and be included in the mapping exercises. The Tribal Land Recording Unit of the Ministry of Lands has emphasised and that the current Lidar survey works are solely for mapping and land recording purposes and do not affect existing land ownership rights and customary land boundaries of the Koehoto people.
The Public and those living in affected communities are through this publication informed that the survey programme is expected to continue over the coming months, with data processing and validation activities taking place alongside field operations. Upon completion, the survey works will enhance the accuracy transparency, and efficiency of the national land recording system, paving the way for improved land administration and sustainable development.
