Late CSSI Commandant Honoured Posthumously During 47th Independence Anniversary

Honiara, 7 July 2025 — Among the six recipients of the 2024 Independence Honours and Awards was 24-year-old Lewis Machaiah, who proudly accepted the Solomon Islands Medal (Silver) on behalf of his late father, the esteemed Superintendent Stephanas Steve Machaiah.

Before a large crowd gathered at the National Stadium in Honiara on Monday to mark the 47^th Independence Anniversary, Lewis received the medal from His Excellency, Governor General Sir Rev David Tiva Kapu, in a poignant and proud moment for the Machaiah family.

The late Superintendent Machaiah, born in 1969, was recognised for his long and dedicated service to the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI). He joined the Service in 1990 and served faithfully for more than three decades. Throughout his distinguished career, he rose through the ranks to become Commandant of Tetere Correctional Centre, Guadalcanal, a position he held until his passing on.

For Lewis, who is also a serving CSSI officer, the event was deeply emotional, reflecting the legacy and values his father upheld throughout his life.

“It is sad that my father isn’t here to receive this himself. Even though I accepted the medal on his behalf, it felt like I wasn’t worthy—because it truly belonged to him,” said Lewis.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Government of Solomon Islands for recognising his father’s contributions.

“This award means a lot to our family. It shows that my father’s hard work and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. We’re truly thankful to the government for this recognition,” he added.

The Correctional Service of Solomon Islands extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Machaiah family and honours the lasting legacy of the late Superintendent Stephanas Steve Machaiah, whose commitment and service will continue to inspire current and future generations of CSSI officers.
