KiraKira Wharf Construction at an Advanced Stage, Expected to Complete by Mid-2026

Construction of the new KiraKira Wharf is progressing well, with works now at an advanced stage. Implemented under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), this Solomon Islands Government project, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank, represents a significant investment in strengthening maritime infrastructure in Makira-Ulawa Province.
The main wharf structure remains on schedule and is targeted for completion by mid-2026. Work on the Passenger Terminal Building is expected to commence soon, running in parallel with the remaining construction activities, finishing off works which include kerbs/fencing and lighting (for both operation & safety) and improvement to the access road.
Last week, a joint team comprising officers from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) Safeguards unit and the LMCP Contract Supervision Consultant (CSC) team travelled to assess ongoing construction activities on the ground.
The team, joined by contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), also met with the Makira-Ulawa Provincial (MUP) Premier and members of the provincial executive to discuss the project’s status and its anticipated benefits for the province.
A delighted Premier Hon. Stanley Siapu was encouraged to hear of the steady progress of the new wharf.
“This project is critically important for the province, as it will significantly improve maritime access, strengthen trade and transportation, and support essential services.
“Reliable wharf infrastructure is fundamental to our province’s economic and social development,” said Hon. Siapu.
The Premier pointed out the dependence of communities on the sea transportation mode as their link to markets, healthcare, education, and government services.
He added that the Passenger Terminal Building will further improve travel experience by offering sheltered waiting areas, improved boarding facilities, and help us keep track of the movement of people in and out of our province.
Meanwhile, MID’s Permanent Secretary Allan Lilia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure that strengthens connectivity and supports inclusive development.
“This new KiraKira Wharf is designed to improve maritime safety and reliability while supporting economic opportunities in Makira-Ulawa Province.
“The Ahanga wharf at Bellona, which is also under LMCP, once completed, will connect rural farmers to markets and a safe landing area in areas prone to harsh weather elements and negative impacts of climate change.
Another maritime component of the LMCP includes the major upgrade for the Honiara seaport.
