Journalists undertake study tour in Guangdong Province, China
The Government of the People’s Republic of China, through its Embassy in Honiara, has invited Six journalists from the Government and Solomon Islands media to partake in a week-long study tour across major cities- Guangzhou and Shenzhen in China’s Guangdong Province. .
The Embassy maintains a warm and supportive relationship with the Solomon Islands media industry, and this invitation further strengthens cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries.
One of the highlights of this week’s visit was to the Fushan Recycling Economic Industrial Park, China’s first AAA-rated scenic site dedicated entirely to solid waste management. The Park operates the country’s largest and most advanced waste-treatment system, capable of processing 12,600 tons of domestic waste per day. It features the most complete range of waste-handling technologies currently in use in China.
Designed around the concept of “circular economy”, the Park has developed a system that promotes resource conservation, waste reuse, and environmental harmony. Its operations cover waste incineration, biomass processing, kitchen waste treatment, medical waste disposal, and sewage treatment.
The Park is divided into eight key sections- Waste-to-Energy Plant, Comprehensive Biomass Treatment Plant, Sewage Treatment Plant, Hospital Waste Coordinated Treatment Plant, Fly Ash Recycling Treatment Plant, Hazardous Waste Treatment Plant, Comprehensive Slag Utilization Plant and Environmental Education Centre
True to its theme, “Environmental Protection with Clear Water and Blue Sky,” even incineration smoke and ash are fully treated using world-leading emission control technologies.
At the Waste-to-Energy facility, the Guangzhou Plant alone processes 3.1 million tons of household waste annually, generating over 1.2 billion kWh of electricity. This is enough to power 420,000 residents for a full year. This is equivalent to nearly half of the Solomon Islands’ population receiving electricity produced entirely from waste.
The facility is also China’s first incineration power plant to use a direct air-cooling and condensation system, which is 60 percent more efficient than traditional water-cooling systems.
Impressively, all major processes from waste collection and treatment to incineration, even mass brick production take place within the same industrial complex. Despite handling massive volumes of waste, the Park remains one of the cleanest environments in the province. At its centre is an education hub where students learn about environmental protection and proper waste management.
The week-long tour has provided Solomon Islands journalists with a rare opportunity to visit, observe, and learn from major institutions and industries across Guangdong, including GAC Aion Group (Electric vehicle manufacturer), Nansha International Port, LAiPIC Innovative Technology Company (Specialists in Agentic AI and translation technologies), Splendid China Cultural Village, Canton Tower and Night Cruise Experience, China Broadnet Media, Shenzhen Press Group, Shenzhen Report Exhibition Centre and Ping An International Finance Centre
Most of the study tour is based in Shenzhen City, once a small fishing village before 1978. Following government reforms, Shenzhen rapidly transformed into one of China’s largest and most dynamic cities, often referred to as “China’s New York.” Today, it is home to over 18 million people and stands as a global economic and technological powerhouse.
This study tour offers the participating journalists valuable international exposure and firsthand insights into global media and China’s all-embracing development and environmental management practices.
