Honiara Road Upgrade Enters Final Stage as Hot Bread Roundabout Nears Completion.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), has reached another major milestone with the completion of asphalt paving along the landside of Mendana Avenue between the Hot Bread Roundabout and the Honiara City Council (HCC) Roundabout, signaling that the Honiara road upgrade is entering its final stage.

The completion of the asphalt surfacing works means the contractor is now undertaking the final finishing activities, including the construction of roadside parking areas, bus bays, pedestrian walkways, and the concreting of the landside section of the Hot Bread Roundabout. Before the project is fully completed streetlights, road signs and markings will be installed and final ‘tidy-up’ works will include landscaping & beautification works in selected areas.

The concrete roundabout will undergo the required curing period to achieve its full strength before it is opened to traffic which is currently targeted for early next week. Remaining activities will continue through August and September 2026.

Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mike Qaqara, said the milestone reflects the steady progress being made to deliver a safer and more efficient road network for Honiara.

“The completion of the asphalt paving between the Hot Bread and HCC Roundabouts is another important step towards delivering a modern transport corridor for our capital city. Once the remaining works are completed, road users will benefit from improved traffic flow, safer pedestrian access, better public transport facilities, and a more resilient road network,” Mr. Qaqara said.

He thanked the public for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period.

“We recognise that construction has caused temporary inconvenience to motorists, businesses and pedestrians. We sincerely appreciate the understanding shown by the public and ask everyone to continue supporting the project by following traffic management measures while the final works are completed safely,” he said.

Temporary traffic arrangements will remain in place during the curing period and while the remaining construction activities are undertaken. Construction areas will continue to be barricaded, with traffic signs and safety devices installed to guide motorists and pedestrians through the work zone.

Traffic Controllers will remain on site to assist road users. Westbound passengers are reminded that the temporary bus terminal remains located within the Honiara City Council compound.

Motorists are urged to exercise extra care, obey traffic signs, observe speed limits, and remain alert to workers and other road users as the project approaches completion.

The Honiara road upgrade is being delivered by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government. The project is designed to improve urban mobility, enhance road safety, and strengthen the resilience of Honiara’s transport infrastructure for many years to come.
