The Solomon Islands Government (SIG) is developing a climate change typology to support climate budgeting, guided by its reform roadmap.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT), and the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC) convened consultative dialogues to develop this typology from 23-26 February 2026.

The climate change typology is a key component of Climate Budget Tagging (CBT), enabling the government to identify and analyse expenditures contributing to climate mitigation and adaptation.

The typology provides a shared methodology for ministries to apply consistent criteria, improving transparency and credibility of climate expenditure reporting.

The dialogues involved hands-on exercises and policy discussions, with technical support from UNDP-Gov4Res, ADB, UNICEF, CBIT, and GGGI.

Two pilot ministries, Agriculture and Livestock, and Education and Human Resource Development, tested the typology, providing feedback to strengthen it.

The process aims to integrate climate considerations into public financial management and support a whole-of-government approach.

The Inter-Ministerial Technical Working Group will determine the next steps and sectors for consultation.
