From the Frontlines: Solomon Islands Pushes for Truth, Justice, and Ambition at COP 30
In light of the intense negotiations at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 30) in Belem, Brazil. The Solomon Islands government at the high-level segments’ calls for a strong and truth climate outcome, the COP 30 this year in Belem Brazil, is regarded as the “COP of Truth”.
On behalf of the Solomon Islands Government and its people, the Honorable Minister of Environment, Climate Change Disaster Management and Meteorology, Hon. Polycarp Paea, delivers a strong message that the hour of climate action is now, reiterating that the Solomon Islands stands on the front lines of the climate crisis, where loss, displacement, threatened livelihoods, food insecurity, and erosion of culture and heritage are daily realities.
Hon. Paea affirms that the latest NDC Synthesis Report confirms that the current efforts fall short of keeping the 1.5°C within reach, in his statement, he urges all countries that all have are duty of care and responsibility to submit their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), urging the high-emitting countries to must lead by rapidly reducing their greenhouse-gas emissions, and that the world must accelerate decarbonisation and transition to low-carbon, climate- resilient pathways, consistent with the ICJ Advisory Opinion. Hon. Paea reiterated the call that Climate Finance is NOT a goodwill—it is a legal, moral, and shared human obligation; that Finance must be predictable, transparent, just, and centred on public and grant-based resources. Hon. Paea strongly emphasized that Solomon Islands CANNOT adapt with debt and call for grant-based and concessional finance that is timely, simplified, and accessible.
On Adaptation Hon. Paea call for strengthened support for both the formulation and implementation of National Adaptation Plans, reaffirming that the blue Pacific Continent State is the centrality of the ocean to climate regulation, and urge’s the UNFCCC and its constituted bodies to elevate the ocean-climate nexus to the highest level of priority. Hon. Paea in his statement highlighted that success of this COP depends on transparency, accountability, and equitable partnerships.
Hon. Paea delivers a strong call to the global leaders that, for Solomon Islands, the 1.5°C limit is non-negotiable—it is a matter of survival.
The Solomon Islands Delegation attending the COP 30 at Belem, Brazil continues to push for the key National priorities on areas impacting the people and vulnerable communities of Solomon Islands, these thematic areas include Adaptation, Mitigation, Climate Finance and Loss and Damage. As negotiations head into the second and final week of COP 30, Solomon Islands negotiators alongside our pacific counterparts, the PSIDS, Alliance of the Small Island States (AOSIS) and the Least Developing States (LDCs), continues to call for a positive outcome in favor of our key calls for COP 30 “ the COP of truth” to Deliver.
