ENVIRONMENT WEEK 2026: SOLOMON ISLANDS JOINS GLOBAL CALL FOR CLIMATE ACTION
Honiara, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands will join the global community in celebrating Environment Week 2026, marked by three important international observances: World Environment Day on 5 June, World Oceans Day on 8 June, and Coral Triangle Day on 9 June.
World Environment Day (Friday), often referred to as the “People’s Day,” encourages individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to take meaningful action to protect the environment. This year’s global campaign focuses on climate action under the theme #NowForClimate, calling on everyone to take action now for a sustainable future.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), together with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) and partner stakeholders, will lead a series of activities in Honiara and throughout the provinces to commemorate the week.
Planned activities include:
- Community clean-up programmes at Rove Children’s Park, Ports Area and Point Cruz, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources coastline and highway area, Honiara City Council area, and Vavaya Ridge Road on 3 June.
- Community clean-up activities at Jericho 2 Community on 6 June.
- Public awareness and street-talk programmes on social media through Solomons Best.
- Tree planting activities at Bloody Ridge National Park on 5 June.
- A live radio talk-back programme on 7 June.
- Ongoing updates, stories, and event highlights through the social media platforms of MECDM and MFMR.
The Ministries encourage all individuals, communities, institutions, organizations, businesses, and development partners to participate in the celebrations by joining planned activities, organizing local environmental initiatives, and making environmentally responsible choices in their daily lives.
Simple actions that can contribute to environmental protection include:
- Walking, cycling, carpooling, or using public transport.
- Using energy-efficient appliances to reduce emissions.
- Choosing sustainable and healthy lifestyles and diets.
- Practising waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
- Planting trees to improve air quality, protect water sources, store carbon, and sustain biodiversity.
- Switching off lights and electrical appliances when not in use.
- Supporting marine conservation initiatives and the global 30×30 ocean protection target.
- Participating in local beach and waterway clean-up campaigns.
