SIEC brings MPs together at the Sir Paul Tovua Complex to discuss voter registration reforms ahead of the 2028 elections.
Electoral Reform Consultation Workshop with Members of Parliament
The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC) today hosted a consultation workshop with Members of Parliament at the Sir Paul Tovua Complex to discuss proposed reforms to voter registration laws. This workshop is part of the Commission’s ongoing programme to strengthen the integrity, fairness, and credibility of elections in Solomon Islands ahead of the 2028 joint elections.
The central focus of the workshop was the definition of “ordinarily resident” under the Electoral Act 2018, which is a key requirement for voter registration. Clarifying this definition is essential to ensuring that voter eligibility rules are applied consistently and transparently across all constituencies. The discussions are particularly timely as the Commission prepares for the establishment of a new voter register in 2027, ahead of the joint national and provincial elections scheduled for 2028.
In his opening remarks, Commissioner Victor Ngele highlighted the importance of the consultation and the role of Parliament in shaping reforms that will directly affect citizens’ participation in the democratic process.
“Today’s consultation marks an important step in strengthening the integrity of our electoral system. By working together with Members of Parliament, we aim to ensure that voter registration laws are clear, fair, and consistently applied, so that every eligible citizen can participate with confidence in the 2028 elections,” Commissioner Ngele said,
The workshop brought together Members of Parliament, Electoral Commissioners, Electoral Commission Taskforce, and development partners. Participants engaged in constructive dialogue, sharing perspectives on the practical implications of reform options and the need to ensure that electoral laws remain fair and workable.
The Commission thanks all participants for their contributions and confirms its commitment to continuing consultations, refining proposals, and communicating any changes clearly to the public.
