CSSI Crime Prevention and Yellow Ribbon Programs Empower Communities in Buala
Buala, Isabel Province – The Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) has successfully conducted a series of Crime Prevention and Yellow Ribbon Awareness Programs in Buala and surrounding communities during the Commissioner’s official tour from 7–12 April 2025.
The awareness programs, led by the CSSI Commissioner and his Delegation, were designed to strengthen community partnerships, promote public safety, and educate communities about life in prison and the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders through the Yellow Ribbon Program initiative.
The team engaged with various stakeholders including traditional leaders, youth groups, women’s, church representatives, and school communities. Key messages centred on the role of communities in supporting returning citizens, the impact of crime on families and society, and CSSI’s ongoing commitment to a safer Solomon Islands.
Commissioner Mactus Forau emphasized the need for collective responsibility in addressing root causes of criminal behaviour and fostering an environment of giving a second chance to ex-offenders.
“The Yellow Ribbon Project is not just a Correctional program—it’s a movement of hope and transformation. Reintegration is most successful when communities understand and play an active role in the process,” said the Commissioner during one of the sessions.
The tour and awareness efforts were warmly received, with community members expressing appreciation for the CSSI’s outreach and open dialogue approach. Local leaders also welcomed the initiative and called for ongoing collaboration with CSSI and other justice sector partners.
CSSI remains committed to its strategic objectives of strengthening community partnerships, promoting public trust, and enhancing public education on correctional matters.
